If one has a carbon fiber cowl there should not be a problem.

 

If one has fiber glass cowling made from a large weave and gel coated with voids, the answer is "probably."  But, anyone with such a cowling should reinforce the inside edges - either with a strip of tighter weave glass or carbon.  I did the former and later had to reinforce the bottom two holes nearest the centerline with carbon and a little flox because of the strain on those holes.  I have not had problems with any of the other holes.

Are you sure these things won’t fret and pull through the fiberglass without some kind of tinnerman washer under the stud nut?

BTW:  Regarding cowling fasteners….why the 1820-2 stud nuts for the cowling?   The grip range on those seems to be between .251 and .343.  If guys are using the -2’s it would mean the cowling surfaces mated together are ¼ thick or greater.  Do they really get that thick after paint?  From my measurements of my cowl, the -1’s are in the right range.  Am I missing something?
