FYI, a few months ago I replaced my flap switch with a DP-DT C&K Ultra Miniature switch (Wicks Part # 7207, $4.65).  Does the same thing as the Cessna flap switch only smaller and DOES NOT have a flap-look to it, just a simple and quite small switch.  Works fine for me but some may not like to small size...  No relays etc...

However, it would be interesting to find out the thinking behind having relays etc by your mechanic.   Maybe things are happening in the circuit that I don't know about which could damage or short something?
