Re: Need a reliable position sensor for landing gear, etc. I just received a position sensor/indicator from Menzimer Aircraft Components (www.menzimeraircraft.com) to use as a flap position indicator on my Lancair IV-P. The components are well made and function well in the shop. The sensors are available in travel lengths from 0.5" to 1.2." Copied the idea from John Wright of Colorado Springs; his works very well with a LED indicator in the cockpit.
The position sensor was $30 but is not waterproof; the LED position indicator for the cockpit is $59. Not cheap, but better than some alternatives I've looked at, and the quality/construction is top notch.
If you need an indicator system showing the range of travel/intermediate positions, consider mounting one of these in a way to minimize exposure to the elements. It could be easily replaced if/when it failed, but I suspect it would provide reasonable life unless exposed to direct water spray, etc. Of course if you only need to indicate "limit" positions (e.g. gear fully up/gear fully down), reed switches/sealed micro switches remain the most reliable/best alternative.
