All (there might be an exception) Lycomings, with oil coolers, should have a
thermostatic valve that starts routing  the oil, to the oil cooler, when the
oil temperature gets above about 180°. This valve works the opposite of an
automotive thermostat, in that it is open when the oil is cold and the oil
can go through the case galleries or the oil cooler. As the oil heats up the
valve starts closing off the port to the galleries and forces it to go
through the oil cooler and then into the galleries. On my engine it likes
the route through the cooler best, so at low ambient temps, the oil temp
will not get off the peg unless I block the cooling air to the oil cooler. I
do this with a butterfly valve on the air intake. If I fly to warmer
climates I just open the valve. I use the waste heat from the oil cooler for
cabin heat, so I do have to let a small amount of air flow over the oil
cooler when it's cold.

In the recent postings on oil cooling, a couple of people have
described their installations and the need to block some air flow to
the oil cooler during cold weather to keep the oil temps from being
too low. I thought the 320 and 360 had a thermal valve that metered
oil to the oil cooler. Doesn't this valve stop the oil flow to the
oil cooler when the oil temp is below a certain value preventing too
much cool air through the oil cooler from being a problem?
