Hello John,
Please pardon me for answering a question
directed specifically at Scott, but I do have first hand knowledge of bird
strikes on the Lancair wing. Ours was a turkey vulture, a fairly big
bird. He hit the right wing while we were on a go-around at about 300 ft
and 140 kts or so. Ripped a pretty big chunk of the wing out and folded the
skin up like a spoiler. Yawed us maybe 30 degrees and rolled us about 50. Took
full aileron and most of the rudder to get her upright. Sue and I did
the repair ourselves, took about 6 weeks. Couldn't have done it without the help
of fellow Lancairian Angier Ames who made a release layup of his leading edge
and upper skin and sent it to us. We used it as a female mold and made new
skin out of carbon. Here's a picture, the full repair details can be seen

Birdstrikes
Scott,
In your opinion
(highly valued due to the three hits) what would the bird strike have done to
the wing if it struck it….also, was it “tweety” or something more
substantial?
