Terrence,
Another method I like is to get a trophy shop with a laser engraver to make
plastic tags.
I get the labels reverse engraved on the back of a material called Rowmark.
Rowmark is a clear plastic with a very thin, tough color coating on the
back. The reverse engraving looks normal when viewed from the front. White
paint in the engraving really makes the letters stand out, and they are
bulletproof. You can get the material as thin as 1/16. The shop I use can
make 4pt font as sharp as any printer--not that my aging eyes could see it
but I was tempted to use it for the passenger warning.
Another option I've used it to roll my own Rowmark by spray painting clear
plastic in whatever color you want. I used Rustoleum with good results, but
the trophy shop will know Rowmark and be able to set up the job easier.
Stick them to the panel with high quality, thin double sided tape. The tape
I use is 3M, about .007 thick.
I like the ability to edit the panel just by peeling the old placards off
and putting on new ones. With all my revisions I've spent about $200 on the
labels.
The last shop we used was happy to get a dxf file, or just a doc file to
scale.
Ask them to bevel the edges, a small detail that makes a big difference.
If you see the results, I guarantee you will be tempted to try to light them
from the back...I'm still working on that one.

Thanks, Dan. I'm leaning toward dry transfer.
