OK, I repeated everything I did on my last flight, watching the CO level, and I found that I got  45 ppm only when I dropped my flaps to land, and I showed no detectable levels in flight at any other time.

Apparently, the disruption in airflow brought exhaust gasses into the airframe at some point, for the rise in levels was immediate when I went full flaps.  Interestingly, partial flaps on take off gave no readings at all.

So, the bottom line is that I feel much better about the whole thing.  And, seeing the rapid response of the AIM detector really gave me confidence--I wouldn't fly without one in the cockpit from now on.
