Lately, I've noticed that the time taken by the hydraulic power pack to repressurize the "down" side of the gear system after 4 or 5 days of
sitting is excessive. I timed it yesterday at 50 seconds. 50 seconds!!!! My pump will cycle briefly (less than one second)
after turning on power when it's set for 24 hours or more and some of the
"down-lock" pressure has bled off.
You're hydraulic pump's electrical low pressure cutout switch is
almost certainly set too high or is malfunctioning! Either that or for
whatever reason, your pump cannot not develop 500 psi in the "gear down"
direction to trip the electric pressure switch. The gear pump should never
be allowed to run that long. About 20-30 seconds should be the max time it
should be allowed to run under any circumstance (other than an emergency) or
you risk damaging it. First thing I would do is remove and bench check the pressure
setting for the low pressure switch, or just install a new one. A local
hydraulic shop should be able to bench check it. Bill Rumburg
