In virtually all cases you can't "put greater than a 20 amp load" on a
20 amp alternator.
The reason I asked is that actually I have a GAMI
supplenator. If the engine rpm gets very low, the supplenator will
drop off line. I found this annoying and asked about it. They
seemed to think if they didn't do that the alternator could be
damaged. ....implying that the typical 20 amp standby setup has the
same problem.
