All,
I have had many favorable respones to my original idea
to make a better nose gear over center drag linkage
for the 235,320 and 360 Lancair's. In response to the
responses, I have gone ahead with the plan to build a
new part. It is my understanding that the lower
linkage arm is the same for all 3 models. The one I got with
my 320/360 oleo strut was the same as the original one
that came with my old 235 strut.
Attached are a couple of concept drawings for the
replacement part I am planing to have made.
My goals for the new part are the following:
1. reduce or eliminate the slop/wear on the over
center attach to strut connection.
2. Make a stronger part and increase the safety margin
on a critical component.
3. Stop worrying about the over center link wearing
out or worse, failing.
I will soon have 3 dimensional images of the proposed
final product.
I will post them when they are done.
On the attached, you will see that there will be more
beef on the connection point at the strut. This is a
much stronger part than the original.
The larger bushing (soft)will be pressed into the over
center link attach point (strut side). There will be a
hardened bushing that will run through this hole and
be securely bolted to the nose strut without
deforming the tabs. The pivot and wear point will now be on the softer
pressed in bushing and the smaller hardned bushing.
This should run for a very long time. If it ever
becomes too sloppy, you could easily press in a new
bushing as it will be a standard size. The hardned
bushing will most likely last much longer over time
but would also be easily replaced. The other major
benefit is, you could tighten the bolt on the attach
flanges on the strut against the hardned bushing
eliminating the chronic elongating holes on the steel
tabs of the nose strut! We will probably press in a
soft bushing on the other side of the linkage as well.
Once I have the 3 dimensional drawings, I will post
them and get a count from everyone that is interested
in a replacement part. Once I know how many we are
making, I will post the cost for each one.
I do not plan to inventory these, only make however
many we need on a one time basis....
