Bob B,
there have been two failures of the nose gear to extend that I know of. One
well documented one is found on the LNN archives. Both caused thousands of
dollars in damage. that is why Lancair increased the strength of their new
gas struts and recommends a regular removal and load test inspection of the
gas strut.
I did not find the dual setup significantly more difficult to push into the
up position than the old setup.
I had both, and found the dual strut setup a significant improvement over
the stock setup. it was one of the few things worth the work.
