Just my two centavos worth re: Autopilots.
I have one of the Navaid units - roll control only - which has a wing
leveler mode and a course tracker mode in N235SP. Mine is set up to track
either the VOR or the GPS output, a KLX 135A, (selectable by switch).
Wouldn't be without it on anything more than an hour trip, particularly
solo. I got tired of trying to look at a chart or airport information
handbook while keeping the dirty side down. If I had to look in the book for
more'n a few seconds, the d--- horizon would keep falling away one way or
the other! Very disconcerting! Now, I can check a map, look up a frequency,
find a dropped pencil or even use a PB and the horizon stays right where I
like it(that's P. Bag in case it hasn't dawned on you. Yes! it can be done
in a 235 but you need to be pretty flexible!) . S'wonderful how a small
gadget installed in your airplane can control something as big as the
horizon. All seriousness aside, if you haven't considered installing at
least a wing leveler, you should if you plan doing reasonably long
cross-country's in your Lancair.
Don't know if the Navaid is still available, it cost (when I bought mine)
about $1K and has been wirth every penny!
