We've added a few new titles to the Builders' Bookstore and hope that you
find them interesting. I'm providing a brief description and the location
of each below for your convenience. Enjoy!
TROUBLE SHOOTING THE AIRCRAFT CHARGING SYSTEM
VHS $21.50 (in the electrical systems section)
A well produced video about your electrical charging system. It begins with
a fundamental explanation of electrical theory. Afterwards the components
of the system are explained including the alternator, alternator control
unit (ACU), voltage regulators, batteries, belts, connections, switches,
and circuit breakers. Then, three primary failure modes are discussed (dead
battery, undervoltage during run-up, and overvoltage conditions) along with
their symptoms, likely causes, and fixes. Even, if your system has been
trouble free, this video does a good job of explaining its functions and
will help you to understand how to properly monitor it for early signs of
problems.
FIRE PROTECTION FOR AIRCRAFT
by Richard Finch $5.00 (in the general techniques section)
If it were not such an important topic we probably would not have carried
this poorly photocopied and stapled 22 page pamphlet. But it is cheap
enough, and even more important, we have all heard too much about the
occurance of in-flight fires causing or resulting from a crash. Here, the
author makes a case for and describes the installation techniques and use
of Halon aircraft fire supression systems and fire suppressive foams which
can be installed in the fuel tanks; a technique most easily done during
construction, but still do-able as a retrofit to an existing aircraft.
OVERHAULING THE MSA CARBURETOR
VHS $21.50 (in the engine accessories section)
A step by step demonstration of an overhaul of a Marvel Schebler
carburetor. This video was produced for the A&P technician as a training
tool for this rather complex job. It is well done and actually make the job
look rather easy. It goes over dissassembly of the throttle and float
sections (step by step, what to keep, what to discard), cleaning and
inspection (what to inspect and where, types of cleaners to use, and how to
get into the smaller places), and then reassembly (again step by step,
lubrication points, inspection, and workability) If you are considering
doing this job yourself, this video will show you exactly what is involved.
Then once you begin, its detail will make the video something you'll want
to set up at your work table. It does assume that you have a Precision
carburetor overhaul kit and several specialty tools available from Precision.
MAINTAINING THE RSA (BENDIX) FUEL INJECTION
VHS $21.50 (in the engine accessories section)
This 1/2 hour video which was produced as a training tool for A&P mechanics
is divided into three basic parts: The first is on routine maintenance
techniques and covers the fuel servo unit, cleaning and replacing the
filter, and inspection and replacement of nozzles, restrictors and lines.
The demonstrations are easy to follow and the techniques can be
accomplished with only basic tools. Many hints and tips are given to help
accomplish these tasks with minimum frustration and minimum risk of
damaging the parts. The trouble shooting section covers four basic areas;
including how to identify the problem, what causes it, and most important
what to do about it. The areas covered are rough operation at idle power,
stumbling when throttling up from idle power, continous running in the idle
shut-off position, and problems involving air in the system. Finally an
explanation of hot starting problems are discussed along with recommended
procedures to minimize or solve this frustrating problem.
GPS & NAV/COM BUYERS GUIDE
190 pages $19.95 (in the electrical/panel section)
Whats presented here will give you an excellent idea of how things work,
what's available today, and help you decide on the features you will really
use and and those that will do nothing but cost more. On the GPS side, this
guide covers everything from the inexpensive handheld workhorse, the
Garmin-90, to large scale, panel mounted, full color, glass cockpits. The
Communications side also covers choices from simple handheld to the
inexpensive TKMs and VALs, to the higher priced Bendix, Narco, and McCoy
lines (no VOR systems are covered). Besides descriptions of the units
available; many with hands on evaluations by the author, the workings and
functions common to all GPS and Comm systems are covered along with the
evolution of the technology, where its at now, and where it will be in
the future.
YOU WANT TO BUILD A WHAT???
by Dick Starks 249 pages $14.95 (in the sport flying stories section)
Never take anything too seriously. Sooner or later you've got to put away
thesin and come back in the house. But that doesn't mean you suddenly stop
thinking about your project and what's its doing there in the first place.
So sit back in your chair, make yourself a drink, and start to laugh. This
is a funny, somewhat exaggarated, but true stories of Dick Starks, a math
teacher building a replica of a Nieuport fighter. Dick becomes part of the
Dawn Patrol, a group of airborne lunatics who fly out of a tiny strip and
are constatly challenging each other to strange types of aerial combat. He
bumbles and stumbles at even the most simple tasks and has the utter lack
of shame to reveal it in this book. This is good fun. Enjoy!
