My guess is it was "counter" torque, if you will. When you get a 14 foot, 4 bladed prop stopped in a hurry (as can happen in an engine seizure in a radial) it can literally bend an airframe if it is on the ground...in the air it seems it would most likely do as you describe.
Still, would love to fly a Sandy some day...the T-28 is kinda, sorta in the same ball park, but not quite...
