"Lets see if this works" must be backed up with some sound engineering decisions -- assuming that someone else must have done the analysis otherwise they would not have done what they did is not part of sound decisionmaking.
You're right. There is one remaining gotcha. We have found that good analysis based on sound engineering principles sometimes is in error and only the testing DATA confirms that you didn't make a little mistake and reconfirm the "law of unintended consequences."
When that happens, it's always a "DAMN, Elwood, it shouldn'ta oughta had done THAT?" situation. I hate when those happen.
