Many thanks, Ed, for your list of items I've neglected to include that need space forward of the instrument panel. Clearly, I've got a lot of planning to do before I determine whether it's even possible to mount the power pack and battery there. I won't be surprised if the end result has me mounting them behind the seats, as you suggest.
However, I've flown in a Lancair with CG 4 inches forward of the fwd limit shown on the plans. It was the sweetest airplane (in the pitch axis) I've ever flown. On this point, Lancair has just announced a new (further forward) forward CG limit for the 320/360. The numbers are in the latest Lancair Mail. My understanding is that handling qualities are greatly improved as CG moves forward, and you should only stop moving it forward when you start running out of aft stick for landing.
The other Lancair I've flown in was downright scary. I don't know where it's CG was.
