For those folks who came to Ada Cooling
Seminar:
Yesterday, we had a lovely RV-8 come to Ada for some baffling
work. He had one of those “ideal” close fitting “plenum”
type baffle systems.
REALLY GORGEOUS AND REALLY NEAT LOOKING.
That and the Lopresti cowl made it look like it was doing 200 mph sitting on
the ramp.
We flew the airplane. #1 CHT was 450 F
on climb out at 4000 feet.
#2 was also really bad.
We went to work on it. It took two
mechanics over an hour just to remove the “plenum” so we could
inspect it. Later, after we fixed the problems, it took over an hour for
three mechanics to put it back on.
When he comes back in a week or so, to
get a further nozzle tweak, we will have to do that all over again.
This is the second RV-8 the owner has
built. He built this to be “really fast” - - and incorporated all
of the “best” cowling and other speed mods.
This airplane is slower than his first
airplane with the more traditional RV 8 standard cowl.
