<< FYI, Stu McCurdy, IMHO, is the leading formation flying guru for experimentals and I very much would like to hook up with him and his team to train us Lancair/Glassair dudes in the finer points of formation flying.>>
Guys/Rick --- I don't know who you are getting your info from, but here's a word of caution.
... I am treading turbulent waters here and have some reluctance to even sending this email, but I think I owe it to y'all...
I really don't know Stu (have met him at several "performer" briefs around the country). I flew F-16s with his son. I have watched his 4-ship of RVs at OSH ... that's about it.
BUT ... YOU NEED TO KNOW - Stu led his formation of RV's into marginal weather (fact: NTSB report) & a wingman with low experience became disoriented and died after becoming spacially disoriented.
The 1st tenet of formation flying is FLIGHT DISCIPLINE. That implies (a) trust on the part of the wingman and (b) that the flight lead will not betray that trust.
I've heard a lot of good things about Stu and wish I could hear his side of the story, but lacking that, I would tread carefully.
send me a private email if you have more questions ... Stu - I'd love to hear your side; you were 'busy' when I tried to ask you at Oshkosh...
My credentials? 18.5 yrs AF fighter time; 9 yrs teaching in T/AT-38s; 10 yrs teaching high performance civils (Lancair, RV, Pitts, Stearman).
