Reading all the latest fuel probe and wing closing questions, I thought I'd
share a mod that I've made and solicit inputs.
In spite of the fact that I have the locking caps, and due to the "thinness"
of the IV's wings at the fuel caps, I was afraid that some overzealous line
person (or even I) might put a fuel nozzle right through the lower wing
skin. To say the VERY least, that could make quite a mess.
What I did was to make up a bash plate about 8" x 8" of 050 aluminum. I
then painted a bit of epoxy on the lower wing surface and built it up
_slightly_ with a bit of micro to reduce its curvature. I then painted
another layer of epoxy thus providing a fair amount of electrical insulation
(AL and Carbon react I hear) between the plate and the inner wing surface.
All I have left to do is bond/secure the plate in just before or after I
finish sealing the tanks. I intend to leave it bare to that when the fuel
nozzle does hit it, it won't be chipping epoxy or fuel sealer off of it.
