Right on about the headwinds.
 
While you are suspicious of my descent rates, what have you measured in your own airplane?
 
Note that for emergency planning purposes, I personally (and initially) use a conservative 10:1 ratio - if it doesn't look close I am looking for a bean field unless the flyover state doesn't have any.
