Years ago (as I recall) a Lear Jet tried to land there (against the tower's standard recommendations). I remember hearing about that when I used to live out there. Although,
Catalina doesn't have a tower. They do have a guy there that
keeps check on the people and makes sure you pay the landing fee. ;-)
Its a really great place to go. Wonderful scenery!
I have flow into there many years back in a C-172 and really enjoyed
it. Then just six months ago a student of mine wanted to get some stick
time in his new IV-P. So, we left the Tennessee area and headed west.
One of the many places we flew to was Catalina (see attached photos).
We stopped for the buffalo burger, took off and flew all the way around
Catalina's shoreline, and then flew along the cost line (low
1,000?) up to Santa Cruz. Then we cut over and landed at Lake Tahoe,
Reno, and ended up in Los Vegas where we stayed the night. This was
just part of one day and we spent six days flying all over the USA. The
Lancair IV-P has to be my most favorite of all planes. I love teaching
in them. J
I have to agree that the runway needs a bit of work there at Catalina.
I have other photos, which show just how tore up it is. But because it
is privately owned, there isnt much we can do to get them to fix it.
I'm just glad it's there at all. Look what happened to Megs.
