The Hughes Racer
reportedly crashed in Yellowstone Park last night after leaving Oshkosh bound
for its home base in Oregon. The pilot, whose identity has not been
released, was killed. I happen to know, because I was talking to him
yesterday morning as we were waiting for the weather to clear at OSH, that the
pilot was Jim Wright, the builder of the replica Hughes 1B. Unless he put
another pilot in the airplane after I left, Jim was flying when it
crashed. No details of circumstances of the crash yet.
Damn.
