I can't tell you how I struggled trying to decide whether
or not to send a reply to this post. I could not disagree with you more
!!
First of all......flying skills and wanting to build a
Lancair have absolutely nothing to do with each other!! I consider the
plane so beautiful and the experience of building such a beautiful aircraft a
true privilege in my life. But, I can tell you for sure that I don't have
the skills to fly it. That is not to say that I won't acquire the skills
to fly it.....but at this point...I would be STUPID to fly it if it were ready
for first flight. Granted.....I will know more about the plane then even
the test pilot......but flying and building/maintaining are totally separate
realms of aviation. Also, flying and spending your honeymoon night with a
new spouse are also completely and totally different realms. Your wife may
kill you....but the odds are that it will have nothing to do with how well you
perform on your honeymoon. Not so with the airplane. Especially for
those who fly slow spam cans and then build a sleek performer like
these.

My thoughts on hiring a test pilot for the first flight. Did you
send someone else on your honeymoon? If you can't fly it the first time,
you should not have built it! Each airplane is type specific, )kind of like
women) no one knows it better than you! Insurance, no one has enough
insurance for a homebuilt. Beware of so called qualifications.
