While reading the posts here in the last couple of weeks, I have sensed a
degree of inconsistency amongst the most knowledgeable, qualified and
experienced aviators out there. It seems that the consensus of opinion is
that is an absolute no-no for the average Joe-Pilot to flight test his own
airplane but it is OK for a more experienced adventurer to load up his
single engine aircraft with fuel and fly across the Pacific.
In my view, it is the same kind of challenge and pride of accomplishment
that spurs one on to do it, in spite of the risk. Thank God, it is still a
relatively free country where each builder can do his own risk assessment
and make his own decision as to which way to go. We certainly must value
the advice of the more experienced but the ultimate decision is the
builder's.
