There are so many that thought like you and are no longer around. They were fine until something went wrong during the flight. Most of us can't match the skills and innate ability of guys like Dave Morss or Don Goetz (or many more). Don has 25 dead stick landings and a recent test flight experience had him successfully dealing with the upper cowling coming off and taking pieces of the empennage with it.
I have over 400 hrs in my 320 and, if I ever finish the Legacy before becoming feeble, I still would use a real "test pilot" for the first few flights. Their experience and cool detachment raises the probability of a good outcome. They have no emotional attachment to the plane as the builder would have himself.
