Hi All,
Been busy getting DQ home and waiting to have a look at innards of engine to
know what happened. Engine coming out today.
Here's what I do know.
Dougs facts are correct. We had 4 SOB's tho.
As it happened;
Loud bang, aft 4 (2?) cyls ran away 4-6000 rpm.
Front 2-- governed by prop stayed at 2400.
Prop-Mixture pulled - aft cyls shut down. front stayed at 2400. Noise went
away-- Tach -0. Prop turning.
Did the procedure we practice in training and landed at Massey Ranch.(4000
paved.)
Touched nose down at 90 (?) and a nose shimmy collapsed NG. Old strut &
upper bearings- (1993) and I admit my nose high- slow settling of the nose
gear technique, to crutch a onset of shimmy was forgotten in the anxiety of
the moment.
Engine Background;
Engine had 90 hrs since major (for cracked case).
During rebuild, a rod journal showed mark that D&S Cam Corp. said could not
be polished out but could be repaired by .010 grind and re-nitride (Elliot
Crankshaft). Rod's were rebuilt by D&S to prevent future marks.
In talking with Con't, they said they suspect the re-nitriding. We'll see.
Don't know much else-- I'll update as it develops.
