The association idea seems to me to be a good one. I responded early to the
proposal but now have a couple of more questions.
Here's what I think I am hearing: Aircraft inspections, initial and
recurrent training, open to all pilots and all models of Lancair aircraft
(including certified models?).
Here is my current status: Aircraft was inspected numerous times while under
construction by EAA Tech Advisor. Was inspected for airworthiness by DAR.
Was pre-testflight inspected by Charlie Kohler. Was test flown by Charlie
Kohler. I was transitioned into the plane by Charlie, also. Was able to
have first flight coverage insurance by having Charlie listed as an approved
pilot. I now have 1100 hours PIC with 260 hours of that total in the
Lancair. I happily fly it in IFR conditions when I need to, practice
approaches and maneuvers monthly, fly with a CFII annually and have full
coverage insurance at what I consider a reasonable premium.
Here are the questions: What would be suggested to me to improve my
situation? What kind of inspections would be required, who would do them,
where would they take place? Would the inpections that have already been done
be satisfy? Who would provide the recurrent training and where would that be
done? What kind of documentation would be furnished and who would be
responsible for its accuracy and authenticity when questioned by the
insurance companies? Would the discounted insurance rates only be available
from one company or is there thought that more than one company would be
involved?
I have followed this string with interest, curiosity, at times amusement,
and, on a couple of occasions, amazement. I appreciate the efforts of the
ones who are taking the project forward. I really see nothing but good
things that can come out of it. I also believe that if someone doesn't want
to participate then that person doesn't have to. It doesn't appear that not
participating will produce a penalty, it is just seems that participating may
produce a benefit.
That's my $.02.
