Radio Shack (and others) sell products called X10 Remote controllers.
Normally they allow remote control of lights and appliances throughout a
home via command units that work by sending signals over the power lines.
X10 also has a unit that hooks to the phone line and allows an incoming
caller (after a password) to control lights and appliances via a touch-tone
phone.  (This unit then rebroadcasts the commands over the power lines)

This is the system I have in my hangar.  I call in before leaving home (15
minutes away) and command my preheater (a Recirculating air heater) to turn
on.  I get there and manually turn it all off and go fly.  Works GREAT and
cost very little other than the phone line for the hangar.
