All List Members: I have long lived in the deep south and have rarely needed to fly north in winter. Those few times that I have flown in sub-freezing WX, I had no problems with starting the engine or in staying warm in the plane at 10,000 feet and higher. During the months of Dec, Jan and Feb, I fly perhaps only 15 of my 150 annual hours. As I suspect this is so for the majority of flyers of light aircraft, that leaves only a dozen engine starts to make during the coldest months. So, how important is it to have a pre-heated engine during the coldest months? As long as the engine starts and is warmed up at the lowest possible rpm, is there any compelling reason to preheat?
