<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Dear all,
We are planning to someday fly our Lancair IVP across
the atlantic and would like to know of other people
out there that have installed auxilliary fuel tanks in
their lancairs.
I certainly know of Gary burns who went around the
world with his airplane and of Fred Moreno who's
friend had quite an adventure coming to the United
States from New Zealand. They both used a fuel bladder
but their airplanes were not pressurized and so the
problem we would face would be slightly different. The
one pressurized Lancair that did have an auxilliary
fuel tank was flown by Bruce and his brother who also
had quite a story to tell.
How did you all go about designing you tank ? Where
did you purchase it ? How did you vent it ? Or does it
not need venting if it is a colapsible bladder ? How
do you choose the volume of your tank ? Do you try to
fit in the biggest tank your W&B would allow ? Our
plane is still under construction and we haven't
weighed it yet, should we wait for the exact W&B or
can we start working on it already ? How much reserve
do we need to keep for a long ocean crossing ? What is
the tank connected to, directly to your fuel selector
valve or out to one of the wing tanks ? What do the
regulations say about auxilliary tanks ? Fred Moreno,
you might be interested in getting rid of your tank ?
The real question is also whether we actually need to
have one. By passing through Greenland and Iceland we
could do the trip with a very comfortable reserve,
however I have been told that they do not allow
experimental aircrafts in those two countries. How
could I find out whether it is true or not ?
For the benefit of the list it would be nice if you
could reply here, I can however accept and would
appreciate as many pictures, drawings and diagrams
sent to me directly to filidauro@bendcable.com as I
can receive very large files there.
To all who reply, thanks, fili
