<< Lancair Builders' Mail List >>
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<--->>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Jeff,
I agree with you that the actions of the few often harm the many. In the case of AVEMCO their decision is easy to understand since they had over $1 Million in Lancair crashes in less than 90 days.
It also bears mention that two of the three crashes were planes which were built by "Professional Builders" and in one case the investigation of the accident has lead the FAA to open an investigation into the "professional builder" and AVEMCO is preparing to file subrogation litigation against the same person. In the other case the owner and pilot (now decesed) was told by a DAR the plane was not built properly and was not safe but he chose to get someone to certify it and he flew it anyway.
I think that for those of us who seek a third party to assist us in completing a Lancair either wholly or in part, we MUST investigate the individual throughly to determine the quality of their work and their track record in terms of fiscal responsibility and safety.
Since the factory will not take on the job of being the watchdog, I would like to see some kind of Lancair Owners Group formed which would provide safety inspections during the building process and afterwards for completed planes which might assist owners who are not builders in determining if they have an accident looking for a place to happen. Remember a lot of life threatening mistakes can be covered up with a nice paint job. If you or anyone is interested, I would be willing to help fund such an operation.
After all...its our lifes which depends upon it!
Dave
