To Mac Taylor - for what it's worth:
Marv's right except for the suggestion to use the rear tie-down ring as the
point to tie off your tail. Use the strap-around-the-fuselage method and
secure it to a weight or (better) an anchor bolt properly mounted to your
hangar floor. (I'm in a rented hangar so I use two 75 lb bags of Quik-Crete
rather than the preferred anchor bolt).
The reason? I've seen the neat little inserted pins (your removable tie-down
ring) release when subjected to a straight down pull of a couple hundred
pounds. Twice! Once to me and once to a friend's Lancair. Fortunately, both
times it ocurred just as the mains left the floor while jacking. Hate to
think what the outcome would have been if it had let go while the gear was
up.
I've looked at mine and can't figure out why it released and I've never had
it do that while being used as a tie-down. Both times could have been pilot
error where the thing wasn't inserted correctly. However, I feel much safer
using the strap and weight method.
Cheers,
Dan Schaefer
