About 5 years ago I sat in Victor Sloans office when he called a former
Continental engineer who designed the TSIO 550B and asked that same
question about the the first customers.  Cont designed and built that
version of the engine for the Chinese.  It was not to be a certified
engine.  Later the contract vaporized, and Continental then began selling
it into the experimental market ala Lancair IV.  Later is was certified.
