I think that probably half the fittings on my aircraft that used NPT threads
required either excessive tightening or were too loose when pointing in the
correct direction.
What I ended up doing was buying the appropriate NPT tapered tap, put a
little grease in the flutes to collect the cuttings and carefully tapped in
small increments until the fitting pointed correctly. Doesn't take much but
easy to overdo. Have to keep going another turn if you overdo it. There were
several locations where the hole wasn't deep enough for the tap (gear door
cylinders I think) so I purchase yet another tap and ground some of the tip
off until it worked - so far so good.
I then sealed the fittings by applying a little Loctite 569 Hydraulic
Sealant on the thread before assembly. They actually recommend using it on
the flare face and thread also - very little required.
