Earl, the seat belt straps will contribute an insignificant downward force
compared to the force resulting from your body's mass in the event of such a
hard landing. As your body momentarily sinks further into the seat during
impact, the belts unload. It's more important to position the belts in such a
way that they keep you in position and prevent upward and forward motion of your
