<< Another reason for alternate air either automatic as in a Mooney or Manual when you have a fuel injected engine.>>
I had an event where i was flying a Mooney with the ram air open when I ran into freezing rain and the filter iced up.
Even though the engine intake air box has a spring loaded alternate air door the engine suddenly stopped.
After a spot of consternation I closed the ram air and shortly the engine started again.
The Mooney engineer said that with the ram air open the mixture control sensor tube iced up. The mixture control said "I have no air so I dont need any fuel."
We learn as we go along.
