Our new Florida friends plan to relocate the hydraulic pump and resevior
forward to the left side of the fuselage, opposite the accumulator on the
right side. This idea is appealing to us as it moves considerable weight
about two feet forward, shortens the run of hydraulic lines and provides
limited access and servicing through the gear door without removing panels.
Main disadvantage is that it occupies the left side of the forward "bucket"
of the luggage compartment--a space my wife already refers to as "useless
as
a hat rack." I figure she won't notice the difference anyway!
I agree that you'd move C of G forward a bit with this scheme, but that
luggage box is already miniscule and you'll be compounding the problem.
Consider instead, using SLA (Recombinant Gas) batteries - placing two 17 AH
ones in the engine compartment. At 26 pounds for the two vs a bit more for
a wet cell battery behind the baggage compartment, you get a much greater
return on moving the C of G forward plus you save a little bit of weight
overall AND you don't give up any precious baggage space. I didn't mention
that 20 to 30 feet of #2 battery cable weighs a good bit more than two to
four feet of it and has considerably greater internal resistance.
I don't think running the hydraulics another 2 ft aft is a significant
penalty.
My $.02 - best of luck with your project.
