I have a dental practice near the Houston Manned Spacecraft Center which
affords me contact with some really interesting people.  Today a patient
of mine, who is an engineer working on the space station, asked how my
project was progressing and began asking questions about what I was
doing about vibration dampening.  I found his questions and comments
pertinent to this forum.  I explained that I had installed the "EAR"
sound suppression material designed for the LNC2 and how interesting
their documentation was about "surface excitement" etc.  I then
mentioned the recent comments on this board about ANR headsets and the
weight trade off.  He then went into a quite detailed explanation about
composites and "surface excitement and resonance" which can cause
fasteners, nuts etc. to vibrate loose.  He also warned of holes
penetrated by bolts becoming enlarged by the constant resonating.  His
point was that I should leave the material installed for reasons more
significant than noise supression.
I am not an engineer, so I will just offer this as fodder for more
discussion.
