Thanks Bob-
I wanted to make some accurate measurements before I responded. To do that I made a gauge from some 3/16" stock drilled size "D" so a screw shank was held firmly. I inserted the screw into the flange holes on the gear box along the bottom and checked to see if the gauge lay flat on the flange. On the rear strip 5 of six holes were crooked, one noticeably worse than the others. On the front flange, most holes I could reach were fine. I did find one that was way off. I still have some screws installed so I haven't checked them all.
I agree that the gear box assembly seems to be well made- I think the quality of the parts Lancair supplies is outstanding. The trouble is in how the box was attached to the fuselage. It may be a problem with my kit alone but I thought it was worth mentioning. -Bill Wade
Interesting information about the original manufacture...I took parts of my
gearbox apart, and all holes/countersinks were well formed. I did find some
significant voids between the fuselage and the associated gear box mounting
brackets, which I filled with flox during re-assembly, but the gearbox frame
itself was well built.
