The biggest problem in selecting what I think is the right Prop. for my Legacy is that there is no real performance data with which to make a determination. The fact that someone one flew faster one day over another in a race is not precise enough information for me to spend $ 14,000 give or take, and then be second guessing my choice. There could have been many factors that led to a faster speed/time.
It would be better if the Prop manufactures or better yet an independent organization did some standardized testing on Prop's performance, just like selecting a fan; each fan has a Fan Curve showing the CFM produced and Horsepower with a given RPM etc.
I know the Hartzell was specifically designed for the Legacy, but what makes it better. I can see that maybe one Prop. has a different profile over the rest and the way in which it produces thrust at different areas of the blade just wraps around the planes fuselage better than the others. But then again, there is no wind tunnel testing to see this.
I see Hartzell is now fitting the new Cirrus turbo with a composite prop.
It just seams like this issue keeps going in circles with no definitive answer because there is no real data!
Very frustrating!
