TCM CRANKSHAFT UPDATE
Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) is making real headway in its effort
to inspect some 3,200 new and reconditioned crankshafts in its 470-,
520- and 550-series engines. But, it's going to be a long, hot summer.
TCM reports that it has now performed ultrasonic testing of 1,000
engines under CSB 99-3, not quite one-third of the affected fleet, and
that about 13% have been flagged for shipment to Mobile for a crankshaft
transplant. The company reports that it now has 26 inspectors on the
job, with 14 more slated to come on stream by early June.
NOTE: Be sure to read Mike Busch's special report on TCM crankshaft
inspections at <http//www.avweb.com/articles/tcmcrank/>.
