No.  That was an idea that I was playing with, but gave up on.  That opening goes to a chamber in the center plate, and out a couple of 1/2" holes, one next to each exhaust port.  It is part of the exhaust gas recirculation piping.  I wanted to blow cooling air into my exhaust shield, and this looked like an easy way to do it.

The problem that came up is that the exhaust inserts have a hole in them which allows some of the exhaust to enter the center chamber.  Thinking back, I could have put some thin stainless sheet around the insert, or a plug in the hole, but leaving it open would allow fresh air pushed into the chamber to flood into the exhaust and play havoc with my EGO readings.

If I ever tear the engine down, I will revisit this idea, but for now I just have it blocked with a plate.
