Ed,
I would like to have the components for a single rotor - perhaps P-ported.
Wouldn't that sucker be powerful and light.
We would really see some major improvements with less weight, I would suggest.
Interestingly, the chrome molly end and intermediate housings developed by Powersport (but never sold), were the same weigh as the aluminium housings. I wish I had thought of that 5 or 10 years ago.

You’re probably correct about the time period, George.

However, if you take the CC increase, the torque increase across the entire rpm range (as you indicated) and the lighter weight, there is no question in my mind that its going to be a significant improvement for aircraft.  I calculated that it should put out close to 220 HP at a little over 6500 rpm.  Perhaps more important, you can swing a larger (or additional blades) on a prop for more low airspeed performance given the additional torque from the engine.

You are correct, thought, until we actually get one of the beast in our hands, its all speculation.  If its much over 5 years, I may just have to convert to a Renesis {:>)

Ed,

From what I've read, and taking the current economic climate and their effect of car sales, into consideration, I suspect it will be another five or six years away.

I don't believe the engine will be much more powerful but torqier with the larger stroke. The design will be slanted toward pollution control, rather than extra power, as evidence by the narrowing of the rotor to retain more heat in the combustion chamber, for more complete fuel burn.

Some suggest for better power a wider rotor (combustion chamber) would be better suited to our needs as in the Aixro (spelling ?) go-cart motor - which has had some success in micro-light aircraft requiring up to 50 hp.

Personally I unsure, but the proof will be in the finished product.

Thanks, Bob

I really like this part :

A fundamental part of Mazda's heritage, the gasoline rotary engine, will be substantially upgraded in the early 2010s. Currently referred to as the 16X, the next rotary engine will offer substantially improved performance and economy through use of Direct Injection Spark Ignition and high-speed combustion technology, enfolded in new rotary dimensions.

Early 2010’s? I guess that might include 2011?  That was another sources estimate.  Well, if that happens, then my next rotary transplant will be the 16B – can’t wait.
