I don't have any info on the stock 20B coils so don't know if they are compatible or not.   I did see a them once and wow, are they heavy!  I'd go with the LS-1 coils for that reason alone.

 

As always, I stress making sure the ambient air temp around all coils is kept lower than 130 F.   The D581 coils WILL fail above this temp.  That is why I recommend only the D580 or D585 type.  There are no known failures on them but they should still be kept cool (<130 degrees).   I just finished making the coil air box for my 20B.  It will be fed cool air from a small scat tube (~1") connected to the radiator plenum.

FWIW, I report the following just for general interest and a heads-up, not as a warning not to use RX-8 Renesis coils (at least not yet).

 

From the car racing corwd, I have been getting a lot of reports and requests for information about using LS-1 coils on RX-8 cars.  They have been having some failures of Renesis coils and are asking if the LS-1 coils will work on the stock ECU.  There is also a rumor of Mazda coming out with updated RX-8 coils, possibly as a result of these failures.

 

The only report I have of problems with Renesis coils on aircraft was from Ian Beedle who had some fail on his plane.  It was thought that this was due to his EC2 being programmed for LS-1 coils but this may not be the case in light of these reports.

 

I am using 6 Renesis coils on my 20B with about 15 hours of ground testing, no problems so far.
