John,

I also didn't like the failure mode of the smog pump, although I flew
with one for 60 hr with no problems in my RV6A with a 1986 13B NA.  Last
summer I removed the smog pump and the rest of the vacuum system.  The
idler I used was an alternator.  The info on the box was:

14-684
Alt 12V DENSO
55 amp unit
85-89 Chevy, Geo
36-14684

This alternator fit in the same space as the smog pump and I made an
adapter to use the smog pump pulley on it. The same mounting points on
the engine were used, requiring just a couple of spacers to accommodate
the different mounting width.  Having a second alternator made me
comfortable eliminating the second battery.  In my case, the net weight
change by eliminating the vacuum system and second battery and adding
the second alternator and a Dynon D10A was a decrease of 24 lb.

Something to consider if you are so inclined.
