That's interesting, John. I have been flying with the same smog pump as my vacuum pump for almost 10 years. However, the way it is oriented in my tractor installation - the outlet may get a bit of oil which may keep it lubricated at bit - I know its now suppose to need any, but after 10 years and still producing vacuum, something is working right.
I flew a while without the smog pump and all I had to do was to switch to a shorter belt and then wrap the belt around main pulley, water pulley and alternator pulley - oops, I just recalled you also have an compressor pump - is it driven off the same belt??

Subject: [FlyRotary] Smog pump eliminator
The title describes both what I want, and what I've become. :)
I've now broken two smog pumps, both in a non-trivial manner. The first one took out the belt (overhead the field, thankfully). I fitted a disconnect so the clutch was held in with a vacuum switch. The second one failed (on the ground) and causes the pully to lock up even when the clutch is disengaged. Not good. It's time to loose the vacuum.
I need an idle gear to replace the smog pump in the belt path. I've searched for eliminator brackets, but can't find one for an RX7.
Any suggestions?
Regards,
John Slade
