RE: [FlyRotary] Re: EWP seized

Hi John;
        I've looked at the Meziere pumps before. They're definitely a purty lookin' unit. I decided against using one because it seems their intended use is at the drag strip where continuos duty is not as important. For this reason they pump far more than is required and don't have a controller to reduce flow for temperature control. This higher flow rate will require more juice, loading my alternator, and reducing my battery only endurance. Weight was also a factor as the Meziere weighs far more than the EWP. And finally cost. The Meziere is far more $$$ and in USD, while the EWP was reasonably priced and in AUD which is a more favorable exchange rate for us Canadians. The Meziere also requires extra fittings that are not included, while the EWP has everything included. Meziere does have that nice adapter plate ready made, while the EWP has no such option, however while it was allot of work I was able to make my own adapter plate, which I like better.

         As the EWP is designed for continuos duty and has proven itself in rally racing applications, I felt it may be more appropriate for my use. One of the primary reasons for going away from the mechanical pump was to reduce parasitic drag on the engine, so this means pumping the minimum required to maintain temp, otherwise the alternator will continue to load the engine. Use of a pump controller allows me to do this. While I agree that sometimes plastic is used in some inappropriate applications, this one seems to be well made. Even the best made products occasionally fail. It could be that I just got a bad unit, or while I believe I have the best installation possible, it could be that I really don't and it's actually the problem.

        Leon has been very helpful in this matter and is shipping me a replacement pump now. After the pump un-siezed, I ran it for 5 hours recirculating water. After about 3 hours I could hear the occasional squeak, but no other indication of trouble. It is now reinstalled on the plane and I've run the engine to check everything and all seems fine. If an inspector ever bothers to come up and check it, all is ready, but when the replacement pump arrives I will swap it out and send this one back.

        I am very curious how your Meziere pump will work and will be interested to hear any reports you can give. What stage of installation are you at? Have you installed the pump yet? Test run?   Let us know.
