The only mechanism I can see for this is that a film of carbon bearing 'stuff' is left on the ceramic part of the plug.  I know an old guy that has always baked bad plugs to get more life out of them.  I mean that literally.  He would bake them at 350 for about an hour in his kitchen oven.  No, I would never eat at his house (this being only one of many reasons).  Has anyone tried baking the plugs do possibly drive off any possibility of a film?
