Hey all you smart guys. Why can't the apex groves just be welded up and a new groove cut? Welds are supposed to be as strong as the base metal or stronger. It is not a "new" technology. EDM machining has been recommended to cut the grooves to 3 mm so what am I missing? Is there a better way to do it? Cheaper alternative? Cast our own rotors? Tell me more. Talent and ideas are not in short supply on this list.

Jim, The rotors are a cast material, I am going to worry about any solution that doesn't remove material, IE. machining or EDM. A cast material can be hard to weld properly. Even if a cast material is soft it can crystalize below the surface in the presence of too much localized heat. (like welding) I'm not knocking welding since I have that miller syncrowave 250 in my shop, I just wouldn't weld up apex seal slots. Milling to 3mm of EDM to 3mm is another mater. I would consider both of those re-work solutions provided the other slots were well within spec. I would also suggest that shot peening and ceramic coatings should be a good addition to our engines.
