The oxygen in your welding bottle is the same oxygen in a medical oxygen or aviation oxygen.

They used to all be made by different processes, to different standards.  But that was a long time ago.  Today, they are all drawn from exactly the same tank.

Just in case you didn't know (got that from the old guy at Avweb that like to talk about running lean of peak and that fancy engine monitor thing).

There IS a difference to be mindful of..  YES.. they come from the same original source.. and has for years... fractional distillation at a gas plant. BUT.. FDA regs now require that medical oxygen be dispensed into tanks with serial numbers that are tracked (and they have for several years now..).. part of the turnaround for med ox requires the tank to be completely emptied, sucked to a vacuum then refilled.

Welders ox does not have this requirement.. so there is always the chance of contamination from a tank being left open to atmosphere (and not closed/blocked when it gets near empty). That being said, I intend to use welder's ox with little hesitation. But I make that decision knowing the possibilities. If you can get a doc to write you a script, you can always get a "medical" tank on lease/rent and it's only a few bucks more than a non-med rental. AND.. we aren't talking much $$.

Just passing it on. I use med ox professionally ALL the time (EMT-P and RN)
